Self Introduction
« on: July 17, 2017, 08:46:26 AM »
Hi Everyone!

Off the bat I would like to thank those of you who welcomed my wife and I to your shoot at ORSA on July 8th.  The genuine warmth of you all was infectious and you made it just plain fun to be there.  No question was too silly and we had an enjoyable time.  I still can’t get over the speed of you folks at the firing line.

A quick about me.  I recently retired from Best Buy where I was a technical manager.  I am a current member of ORSA. My wife and I raised two children in the Knoxville area, one became a high school teacher, the other a registered nurse.  My wife was born in Maryland, I was born in England.  We currently live in Roane County, Tennessee.

Building on that visit It appears I have caught the bug.  The more I explore online, the further the hook gets set.  That all being said, I would appreciate some pointers on moving forward.  I have the basic attire under control I believe - or so my wife says - (you can and probably will let me know if not 😊)

My questions concern weapons.

I have a Marlin 1884CS 357/38 which is I think appropriate.

I have several Ruger single action revolvers however my only Vaquero is in 45 Colt.  My wish is to stay with 357/38 for both rifle and revolvers and I am leaning towards a Stoeger Coachman 12 Gauge  and possibly a pair of Ruger Vaqueros Model 5133

None of the above is in stone and I am wide open to suggestions since I am very much in the learning stage.  I would absolutely appreciate any advice anyone can give.  In addition, I would be interested in purchasing/trading with anyone who may have any available equipment that appertains to this discipline.

I will be registering with SASS today.

While I doubt my shooting skills will impress anyone, I truly look forward to the participation and hope that eventually I can give back to this sport.

I understand there is a “set-up” on August 6th I would like to attend and of course do any orientation that is available.

Thanks for reading this way too long post!

Nick Bennetts.

Welcome to the madness, it is a lot easier to stick with the same caliber between pistols and rifle, you cant really beat a Stoger but you will notice about half of us shoot a 97 pump. Maybe some of the folks on this forum will look in their gun-safes and  see if they have a set of pistols that need a new home where they will be used.

I will plan on an orientation on the 6th, If anyone else would like to attend you are welcome. I will bring some guns and rounds if you don't have everything. I dont think I have any more 38's but will look to bring them with me.

Jackalope will set the setup time and post it here. We will set up a stage then do the class. Normally around 1:30 or so.

Set up is planned for August 6th around 1:30.  It probably won't take very long.

I understand that Sheriff Langston will have an opportunity to handle some Ruger revolvers this week.  He can probably get a look at a double-barrel, too.  If he wants to walk out back to the garden, he can take a look at my 1897, currently being used as a tomato stake.   ;D

We can bring all that stuff to set up and I have plenty of .38 ammo.

You mentioned you have several Ruger Single Actions, if you have any Blackhawks in .357 they are perfectly fine for all age-based categories and B-Western.

Don't rush to buy guns, I'm sure you'll find someone to loan you some guns to start until you know what you want. Shoot as much as you can to decide what you want to buy.
