Title: Various Thoughts and Cogitations, New Version
Post by: Fast Harley on October 15, 2018, 08:50:45 PM
I've been neglecting my column that I used to put a lot of "thought"  into, and I have had some
requests, (one,) to revive It. The last version is back about page eleven!
So I was thinking: Except for the obvious: Death, disease, and maybe taxes, there's not much that
is worse than bad neighbors. The modern version of that is much worse than the antique version was.
When I was a child the worst neighbor, possibly, that we had yelled VERY loudly at his wife when he
was drinking. (Never touched her as far as I know.) A finer woman never lived and he was a fine man
when sober. Next was a man with a heart of gold who would help any neighbor do anything. However,
I hated to see him coming because he liked to brag on himself, and he liked to tell really stupid tall
tales. The closest neighbors we had weren't really neighbors at all. (She was Dad's first cousin.) The
two of them were actually my second set of parents. I miss them almost daily.
No one locked their doors and didn't need to. I knew almost everyone from our house to downtown, a
mile away. Oh, for the fine neighborhood of long ago.
Harley.

And here's another: This past Saturday, my chiropractor, who is also my friend, (I've been going
to his office every six weeks since '86,) fell while hunting and broke his arm. I'm being facetious
about this, but it seems to me there's nothing more useless than a one-armed chiropractor!

And yet another: At the Tn. State match we had a very nice lady that kept score for us
the entire match. Many of you who were there know that it was breezy and quite chilly
on Saturday. The second stage of the day, the fort, this lady was sitting in the corner of
wall and Lonesome Al happened to be close so she called him her "wind breaker." Now,
it so happened, (I'm not making this up,) that we had a shooter on our posse named,
Kentucky Windbreaker. He, and everyone picked up on this, so from then on she had
these two guys on each side of her whenever possible. How many of you would like to
have a windbreaker on each side of you? I'm just sayin'.

...How many of you would like to have a windbreaker on each side of you? I'm just sayin'...

I guess that would depend...

Are they breaking wind in a good way?

                        or

Are they breaking wind because of something they ate?

I'm just askin'...            :-\

All I know is the person with said alias chewed bubblegum the entire match.
Scorekeeper lady offed him a piece of candy.
He says, "Got bubblegum."
She says, "Put it in the other side."
His answer was: "No, gives me gas." ???

In the spirit of Various Thoughts and Cogitations I though I would re-post the following, originally put on the SASS Wire.   Sadly the story is true.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have a very small workshop off my carport.  Lots of reloading and woodwork tools. Crammed full.  Last summer I noticed a snake tail move back under stacked portable workbenches and

paint cans.

I’m not fond of snakes.  Truthfully, they scare the snot out of me.

I needed to reload ammo, so I could not just close the door and pretend I did not see it.  So, I called in the big guns.

My wife is a fiery 90 pounds or so and knowing I would have my bravery questioned, I called for assistance.

I took the humiliation, “It’s just a snake for heavens sake” etc.  However, I knew it was not a problem I could handle myself.  I knew at this point I am less than a cowboy.

Because of the weight of the portable equipment I was engaged by the wifey eliminator to move piece by piece until she could get a clear shot (no, not a weapon) at them.  After demanding

access to two broomsticks, which I readily procured, she proceeded to snag the evil reptile as one would a noodle with a pair of chopsticks.  Them demanded I get out of the way with I think,

another derogatory statement about my manhood.

I did.

She then deftly placed the critter at the tree line across from our country road while constantly berating the slimy animal with rhetoric such as “don’t come back here, keeping heading south” etc.

I chose not to inform her at this point that snakes don't understand the English language - just let it go.

I’m not an easily intimidated guy, consider myself worldly and brave in most situations.  This was not one of them.

Cherish your partners in life, it’s what makes everything work.

I have noticed that when a top shooter has a near squib, the next bullet and the first one hit
almost at the same time. The faster bullet is doing it's job, but the slower one, not so much.  ::)

Today, I was forced out into the world, visiting six different stores, a gas station, post office,
AND the dentists office. Has anyone else noticed that the world of today is not the world we
used to know? Well, today I had WAY too much of the modern world!  :(

12 gauge is good medicine for snakes in the work shop!
Watch paint cans valuables , explosives ect...
When snake is taken care of use wood working tools to fix holes,.

Well,
Have you ever wondered what some folks must think when a group of mature adults shows up at a bar/restaurant in cowboy garb?

Title: Re: Various Thoughts and Cogitations, New Version
Post by: Fast Harley on December 19, 2018, 07:05:33 PM
It's simple. Everyone else are the one's who are dressed funny.

It's odd to see how all that has changed. Many years ago when we first got into the game, we dressed
over the top, and when we went out to restaurants or anywhere else, folks wanted to talk to us. Many
said they enjoyed seeing us that way. Not anymore! People fear what they don't understand, and we're
no longer understood. No one makes eye contact. Dressing up in any way is not the way, these days.
Dressing down is the norm. Sad.

Are modern animals smarter than they used to be, in particular, domestic animals?
OR, are modern humans dumbed down to the point we think it so?
What I see, seems to suggest that millennia of contact has rubbed off, so to speak.
However, in my life I have kept dogs, cats, horses, chickens, etc. I know that all of
those are much smarter than given credit.
We have a cat near eleven years old that has a human vocabulary of around a half
dozen words. No lie!
Just thinking, as always.....

I miss the days:
Kiss and I once were part of a posse that went everywhere like in brackets. Let's go to Tn. State. Of course.
Twelve or fifteen of us. Let's go to Alabama. Sure. Spend several days at Possum Trot. Absolutely! Road trip
for monthly's, yep. Ga. State. No problem. Texas? Well, why not. All jobs always got done. Never had to ask
for anything. All was fun, and fun. THEN, the after-party.....Stay up all night, rain, snow, heat.....so?
Some have quit, many have had health/family problems, some have moved away, children, grandchildren,
work, etc.
And my shooting partner with many issues.....Just not the same.
Yeah, I miss the days!

Harley,

Wow!

That made me remember back. We did have some times.
Unfortunately,  I've been one to miss a bunch the last few years. I'm trying to get back in the game but it's a tough hill to climb.

I guess we just have to enjoy keeping up with The Tombstones. They seem to always be on a trail drive of some sort.

I'll  be back!

With retirement only a few month away, I plan to add to my away match repertoire, if money and health allow.

Hopefully, a number of our regulars will be able to return from the "injured reserve" list.

That time I bought a gun.....
Was at a "newer' local gun store, today, and something about it all brought up this old memory.
Some 16 or 18 years back, I had ordered a gun from a friend, now passed, and got word to pick
it up at his store. That day at work, ball caps being head gear of choice, unless hazards meant,
hard hat, some salesman had left some advertising ball caps for us. Had my arms full, leaving for
the day so put the new ball cap on top of the one I had on. Just wanted to get home and day done,
I went to pick up my new gun. Going in, four or five people in the shop, two or three I knew, plus
the owner, and I noticed they said little, no one would make eye contact. Did the paperwork, paid
the cash. Nobody laughed, or even snickered. Driving home I noticed that I was wearing TWO ball
caps! I hate them now, (ball caps,) don't wear them because they remind me of work. Question:
Did they notice and were afraid to say, OR did they not notice, at all? We'll never know.....
Harley.

Things I saw and heard at the Rangers, today:

Number 4- Question was asked, if you picked the Joker on the card suit stage, you could choose your side, but could it be
one side for pistol and one for rifle? I said, "No." Capt. Bill said, " But it's "A" side, and "A"nother side." Good try, Bill.  ;D

Number 3- "Way to hang in there," might not be the nicest thing to say to someone who had a bad stage. (Inside joke.)

Number 2- That thing that Unpleasant wrote about: " Do not look at the donut hole. Look at the donut whole!"- I think really
helped me clean the smaller targets on a couple of stages, today. Seriously. Something to think about.

And.....Number 1- Empty shotgun shells WILL NOT fire!  :o

You had to be there.

Was talking to Sheriff Lord on the phone, today, about the memorial for Judge.
Along the way he brought up a party we had here, at our place in 2012. A zero, or one,
tornado in August of that year had brought down a 90 year old tree that my great grandfather
had planted.
I named it the Tennessee Chainsaw Party. Worked up the tree, gave out much of the wood, food,
etc., later.
On into the night, as he said. Good times! Need some, now.

Nothing but neglect for my thread, here. Too much real life and responsibility.....
I have often thought that if I could have talked with our western heroes, who would it be?
I would have said, and have said, John Wayne, and that's worthy, however, with maturity, and
just perhaps, wisdom, I now would say: Audie Murphy.
Thoughts, anyone?

DANG! It makes my head hurt trying to narrow it down to one person. Clint East wood is still alive & like John Wayne has had a long career mostly on the big screen. James Arness also had a long career but mostly on the small screen. So many stars, co-stars, leading ladies, sidekicks and extras that made westerns such a great genre. I guess it would be to John Wayne because of the expanse of his career and all the western actors & actresses he worked with & knew.

Bringing up sidekicks makes me thank of George Hayes. Most of us know him as Gabby. I remember him from the Roy Rogers shows but he goes back much father that that. Sidekick to Hopalong Cassidy. Windy his name. Was also sidekick to a young actor named John Wayne in the 30s.

A Thread on the SASS forum regarding SASS early originals being forgotten caused me to post this.....

Having been involved in SASS for several years, and several years in range affairs, like most of us,

I have a list of folks in my head that is into hundreds of names. So many passed, got too many health

problems, quit, moved away, etc. The point to me is that all of us in CAS are a part of a breed that will

not be seen again. I have met some of the originals, I even met Phantom, once. I'm positive he wouldn't

remember. (In a parking lot in Texas, some years back.)

Some, not all, of the finest friends I have ever had in this life have been in Cowboy Action. They are real,

they last, and you can ride the trail with almost all.

A price can not be put on the enrichment this game has meant to my life.

Whether well known or not, with thanks given to all that have helped our path, how wonderful it is to

have known these people! New shooters, as well!

Last weekend, as a purpose, I was looking for westerns I had never seen, (Yes, never seen.)
On xfinity, In the app section, I ran across a TV western from 1960 called Tate. I had never
heard of it. Turns out it was a summer replacement for the Perry Como Show! There are only
13 episodes. It was never picked up and was never syndicated for replay, (as far as I know.)
The Star, David McLean, was one of the Marlboro Men! I had doubts, at first, but soon I was
hooked. Stayed up half the night. Story lines, acting, and especially guest stars, are great.
I have only two episodes left to watch, after a second session, mid- week. I will miss it when
I see the last of it. If you find a way to see this, you should. At least you should google the
history of it.

Thoughts on virus restricted matches:
A little more than a week ago I shot a "social distancing" Cowboy match. I wore a mask the entire time
as a personal experiment to see if I could. The whole time from out of the truck to back in the truck. Can't
say it was pleasurable, though probably safer, with heat index more than 90. Believe it affected my shooting,
but that's a real convenient excuse, having not shot a match in 12 weeks. Roll Eyes
I felt like I was being unfriendly, no hugs or handshakes, when of course, may have been the friendliest thing.
Difficult to keep distance when it's not what you're used to and large posse.
I'm glad I went, and while it was grand to be with my friends, it certainly wasn't the same.
Having read the very complicated new SASS guidelines, would I shoot another club level match that way? Likely
Yes. Would I consider shooting a state or higher match with similar guidelines? For myself, certainly, no.
Hopefully this very real and potentially dangerous situation won't last forever, but who knows?
What are your thoughts, friends?
Harley.

My government asked me to stay home 2 weeks to flatten the curve so we did not overload the health care system, so I did. My government asked me to stay home two more weeks to help slow down the spread of the CV-19 virus and flatten the curve so we would not overload the health care system, so I did. My government asked me to stay home another month to try to slow down the spread of the virus, so I did. Our leaders shut down our economy for 3 months which will drive many small businesses out of business. My thoughts are we cannot hide from a virus that will lead to the destruction of our economy. Many of us have already had the virus before we knew it was deadly, just got sick for 3 or 4 days and went on with our lives. Anyone that is in the high risk group needs to be very careful, anyone that has interaction with someone that is in the high risk group should be very careful. Anyone that is worried about contacting the virus should be very careful.
I personally seem to be a risk taker, I drink from the garden hose, run a chain saw without kavler chaps, I participate in a sport that uses live rounds shot against steel targets, I ride motorcycles a lot, if my choice is to hunker down at home or take my chance with the virus, I will pick the virus every time. I am not in the high risk group, I do not interact with anyone that is high risk (or at least I try not to). I have not seen my parents since Christmas and have not seen my sister-in-law for about the same amount of time, (she runs a nursing home)
That being said, there are about 14 of us (cowboys for kids) that probably had the virus back in February.  Three had to seek medical help, two showed no symptoms, the others fell somewhere in between. Just about the same numbers the CDC came up with when this first started. I do not encourage anyone to do anything they are uncomfortable doing, go with your instincts. As for me, I am back at work and making calls as the utilities start to open up. If I have to work I plan to enjoy the rest of my life too.
Stay safe, stay healthy.

If you have seen the modern version of the Lone Ranger, one of the themes was,
"Nature is out of balance." Well, along with all of the other things going on, now,
yes it is. I have a daylight raccoon, which comes round 3 or 4 times a day. We have
slingshot wars. Due to too much padding by my opponent, I am not winning, YET.
That used to mean it was rabid, no more.
Also, we have a less than nocturnal skunk which is friendly and we happily feed when
possible. THEN, we have the groundhogs which have long cursed my barn from time
to time. After repairing damage several times this month, I checked this morning and
a rabbit jumped out of a NEW, and gigantic groundhog hole. Trust me, here, I know
what a rabbit looks like. Seemed apologetic. Yes, I'm a rabbit, get over it.

That rabbit wasn't wearing a top hat and vest, looking at a pocket watch and saying "I'm late. I'm late. For a very important  date."?  If so don't follow him. It's a trap.

”Yes, I'm a rabbit, get over it.
Nature is out of balance.
Harley.”

I thought the rabbit was named Harvey!

On a related note, actors in westerns were mentioned earlier. I would like to have talked to Jimmy Stewart.

Lady T and I (mostly her) are cleaning out the house getting it ready to put it on the market and I found this poem I wrote quite a few years ago. I think I sent it into SASS for the Chronicle but dont remember if they ever published it. I made a few changes and thought I would high jack Harleys thread.

Good Guns, Bad Shoots

From the very first time I knew I was hooked
Just draw, aim, and fire, that’s all that it took
The scenarios are written, there’s little left to chance
Just make the steel ring and do the cross-draw dance.

The first thing to do was to get some equipment
Hat, Boots, and Bullets…man what a shipment
Not the mention the clothing, the holsters and cart
My savings were hemorrhaging right from the start

Of course, the big this is picking your guns
The only type of shopping that very much fun.
Two Vaqueros, a Winchester, and a double barrel twelve;
I was ready for my first shoot-I was going to give them hell.

The buzzer sounded, I grabbed my first gun
Thought I was greased lighting, Boy this is fun.
When the dust had all settled and the smoke had all cleared…
What do you mean twelve misses on targets that near?

It must be the pistols; I’ll trade them for clones
With a set of Peace Makers, I’d be bad to the bone.
So, for my Vaqueros and some money to boot,
I thought I was set for my very next shoot.

This time I was ready when that darn buzzer came
I whipped out those pistols - I was going to win this game.
I emptied my pistols and grabbed my Winchester;
What followed could only be called a disaster.

Those big rifle targets, they looked mighty tasty,
I shucked 5 live rounds before someone hollered “Safety!”
A rifle with fewer safeties, now that’s the gun for me;
So, for my Winchester and some cash I bought a Rossi.

That very next shoot, it was finely going my way…
“Til I heard the Posse Marshal holler, “97’s load away.”
That old double barrel couldn’t touch those old pumps,
Another trade, more cash, that old double got the bump.

From Colts, to Remi’s and back to Vaquero’s
All I wanted to hear was “Misses – Zero”
Winchesters, Marlins, Rossis and Lightings,
The parade of guns was really quite frightening.

Procedurals, squib loads, dropped rounds and dropped guns
Time plus penalties, higher math is not much fun
Well, it been 20 years and the swapping I’ve quit…
Cause I’ve learned I have the most fun if I just shoot from the hip.

Nice one, Tombstone, and so true. You got to hear, "Misses, zero."
Congrats on the clean Outlaw match.

"My" thread is not just for me.....

I'm Fast Harley and I was anti-social.
THEN: I found Cowboy Action Shooting. From the very first folks were friendly and helpful.
Before too long, I became accustomed to the comradery, the hugs and handshakes, the genuine
caring for one another. The touch and closeness of others became the norm. This collection of
like-minded souls was like an addiction that had to be experienced!
After many, many years, one day a calamity occurred. No longer could we gather as we did. No
more contact and friendly gestures. Alas, at times even facial expression could not be seen!
I, for one, am in withdrawal: In fact, I am backsliding. I had become a social animal, but now...

Fun is at a premium of any kind, right now.
Also, there is not too much life in the forums for a while now.
Depression, and apathy are widespread, and some of that leaks over into Cowboy Action, I think.
Many can't participate due to underlying conditions, and the rest of us can't be as free as once was.
However, Cowboy matches have always been a great escape from the world and we don't need to
lose sight of that. Hopefully someday there will be more than the "New Normal."
CAS is only a game, but remember: That is the beauty of it!
It's true, all being said, that we are not doing Tn. State, or Ambush partly because of the state of things
but mostly L.K.'s pain level.

As for me, I have been having "fun," and excitement roofing my front porch, and working in firewood
for the winter.

Yes, I have awakened, climbed out of my hole, not seen my shadow, so:
What have you been doing during these terrible times for your mental state? I checked and mine is fine...  :P
I have revisited the guitar, (loudly,) and the drums, (loudly,) at least one gun project, as always building, remodeling,
planning gardening for the season.

Kitty Kat and I have been doing repair work around our house, her mother's house, and our daughter's house.  I thought being retired meant I only had to do fun stuff?

I've always considered myself a good cook.  Since most all our meals have been cooked at home, I've been making higher level stuff.  So far, so good and, as always, you get to eat your mistakes (you have to destroy the evidence somehow). I've also been doing some gun and leather projects.  We are both hoping that, post vaccinations, we can "play" with more of our friends at some bigger multiple day shoots.

Harley, since you mentioned gardening...  I planned ahead this year and ordered all the seeds for the garden from Pine Tree seed company.  Last year Mom found part of a 4 or 5 year-old package of bush beans from Pine Tree in the back of a drawer.  There weren't enough so I bought a new package of Burpee seeds at Lowes.  We planted a row of each right next to each other.  Only about half the Burpee seed sprouted but every single one of those old seeds came up.  Lesson learned.

What are you planting in your garden this year?

Mostly been doing a butterfly garden for 2 or 3 years. Figured it was time to go big again. I also ordered
seed and plants early, can't tell about later...
Plan on tomatoes, potatoes, sweet potatoes, corn ,beans, peanuts, onions ,cabbage, lettuce, squash, etc.
Flowers, and wildflowers.
Probably won't rain for 3 months.

Heard on radio that there may be a seed and plant shortage this year. Good thing you ordered early Anita.
Harley as far as rain goes, looks like end of this week and next week is a wash out.  :o

Ethan, what I really meant to say was it will frost and freeze until and probably after crops are
planted, THEN it won't rain for 3 months.

I guess that must be true, Uncle Ethan.  They had a notice on their website that there is high demand and orders might take a while.  Got my shipment today.

Sugar peas, radishes, lettuce, cucumbers, beans, squash, plus some zinnias and coneflowers for the front yard.  No tomatoes because for the last couple years we got leaf spot.  Wish I could grow okra, but I just don't have the room to plant enough.

Do you boil your peanuts, Harley?

My mental state may have improved over this last year.  At least, I might be a little smarter after completing some online courses in Engineering, Physics, Mathematics and a few others.  There are some woodworking and leather projects in the works along with upkeep on two houses.

I have not had to reload very much.    :-\

p.s.  Boiled peanuts...ewww!

Its been pretty calm here for us. We traded campers during the lock down, got a side loading toy hauler so I could take my bike with me when we start traveling. We bought a piece of property down at Appalucy's place. Becky sold here place in Maryville, I bought a new bike, I retired, and we are pretty sure we sold the farm this week (beats the hell out of buying the farm I guess) Now we have to build a place in Blairsville.
So all around pretty calm here other than I am going to be homeless for about a year.
Cant wait to see what is next.
Glad I dont like to grow a garden.

I have been dead airspace here for a long time, It's hard to deliver during a plague...
It will be bittersweet, but how about The Thrilling Days of Yesteryear:
I'll start with how much I miss Possum Trot! Wild times..... I think of it often.
Add in how it was and used to be When L.K. and I owned a cabin a few years at Hooten Old Town. Adventures there.....
Not to mention, I think it was our second year in the game we shot 49 of 52 weekends that year. How I long for THAT.
Not having my partner with me every time causes me grief.
The current state of things cramps my style. I want freedom like we used to know.
What is left for the game, I don't know... For all of us, I don't know...
Hell, there used to be a party connected to everything.
Many friends have been lost, hard to stay in the path.
Tell your tales, let's talk.
Harley
PS- Last Kiss and I have been married 27 years, today. Some would say, "WOW! That's great." Others would say, " Pffsstt, that's nothing!"
PS- The anniversary was Friday. I had to learn how to copy and move the topic from a laptop...

To not be off topic too far with this, I'll post it here. (Inspired by Tombstone.)

Things I'd Like to See:

That those we miss could show their smiling faces
And strap on their guns and take their places
We could hug, shake hands, mingle with ease
Without care or threat of disease
To not give a hoot about the weather
Instead be glad just to be together
Have lead and powder to burn as we want to
And not even have to think of a twenty-two
Big or small, close or far...
Look at targets and say, "There they are!"
If stages tough and hard to play
We'd just grin and say, "Okay."
Forget the world and get the thrill we seek
Get a smile to last all week
Run and gun, work up a thirst
Then see who gets to the restaurant first
Live and enjoy the Cowboy Way
Even if it's only for the day
F.H.
