Rules Discussion / Rule change vote
« on: November 02, 2019, 08:54:05 AM »
We are going to test a new voting process for SASS, we are looking at changing the rule about leaving the loading table with a cocked rifle. This is rifle only. Here is the wording on the rule change. Please read it and chime in if you would like to. I will be taking a vote at the next shoot one the 9th

VOTING ITEM INFORMATION
Proposed rule change:
Eliminate the automatic Stage DQ penalty for leaving the loading table with a cocked rifle.
In such instances, the shooter will be directed to point the rifle safely into the back berm, bring the hammer to full cock if it is in the half-cock/safety position, then pull the trigger.
If no round is fired, the shooter will be directed to finish staging firearms in order to start the stage (No Call).
If a round fires when the shooter pulls the trigger, the shooter will be assessed a Stage DQ and directed to proceed to the unloading table

Current rules/penalties:
Movement is not allowed with a loaded round under the hammer of any firearm. Movement is defined by the basketball “traveling” rule. Whenever a shooter has a loaded round under the hammer of a firearm in hand, at least one foot must remain in place on the ground. The first violation will result in a Stage Disqualification penalty. The second violation will result in a Match Disqualification penalty assessment. It is also not allowed to leave the loading table with a cocked, loaded firearm.
SHB p.12 – Participant Conduct - Safety
- Rifles may be staged with the magazine loaded, action closed, hammer fully down on the empty chamber (NOT the safety notch), with the muzzle pointing in a safe direction (adheres to the 170° rule).
SHB p.15 – Safety and Handling Conventions - Rifles
- Changing location/moving with a live round under a cocked hammer or firearm with the hammer down on a live round.
- Changing location with a long gun with the action closed and the hammer cocked.
SHB p.23 – Stage Disqualification Penalty (SDQ)

Definitions:
Cocked – hammer not fully down (full, half-cock or safety notch).
SHB P.43 – Glossary of Terms
Hammer down – hammer fully down at its final resting position.
Loaded Firearm – Any firearm with unfired round(s) in the action/chamber/magazine.
SHB p.44 – Glossary of Terms

General Discussion / Traveling with the Tombstones and friends
« on: October 13, 2019, 03:13:25 PM »
Well, believe it or not it that time of year again. That’s right it’s traveling with the Tombstones along with Appaloosa Honey, Horse Doc, and of course, Outlaw Cactus Red.

We always start the trip with the Tennessee State Shoot, so that is where this story needs to start. The Wartrace Regulators put on one of the best matches each year and each year somehow it just gets better and better. We had three days of shooting fun. They also made it a 12 stage match this year. The weather was just about perfect, well Saturday morning started out a little cool but turned out beautiful. Papa Dave, Whiskey Hayes, Randy St Eagle are just the front and faces but it takes a large and dedicated group to put on a match this big and make it run smoothly. Thanks to the entire Wartrace group, once again you all out did yourselves. The patterns were different and fun. Vendor row was great, Chickamauga Slim did a bang up job getting all the vendors. A special shout out to Slim from Lady T. They also allowed me to teach RO1 in front of JM Brown and I should receive my black pin shortly and then can do some RO classes and both Oak Ridge and Cleveland. (I thought that was going to be the highlight of the match, boy was I ever wrong)

The banquet was again hosted by the Bell Buckle Café. Ironically I had the same thing at the banquet that I had the day before at lunch, from roasted beast to the blackberry cobbler with ice cream.

I was also caught completely off guard and by surprised when I was asked to come up to the stage to introduce Last Kiss, Master Jedi Gunfighter along with Widder and  Kurpt Karl. It was a set up from the get go. I was recognized as the Jedi Gunfighter of Year. I was over whelmed and very humbled. I managed not to shed any tears on stage but got chocked up as soon as I got back to my table. To top that off my parents attended the awards banquet and got to see the presentation. I am still in shock and get chocked up just thinking about. It’s really hard to type with blurry vision. I want to thank the above mentioned for all the work that went into the presentation, Last Kiss pulled a page out of her vest and started to read it, heck I couldn’t figure out who she was talking about. A very special thanks to my wonderful wife Lady T, she was in the background working to design the most beautiful buckle I have ever seen. She also contacted some folks to get letters of recommendation and Testimonials for the Jedi Council. I was also knighted by Bill the Avenger and his ever present Light Saber. There are pictures floating around on Facebook if you do that Facebook thing. Rebecca Campbell Arrants is the FB address or page. She also goes by Lady T.

We left out of Wartrace Sunday morning heading west. The first two days are going to be taken up with driving trying to get through the flat lands. First night just past Little Rock, second night Elk City, OK. Hopefully it will not be too exciting so not much to write about but I will try to do a few short post until we get settled somewhere for a few day so we can ride the bikes and take in a few sights.

I sure do love this trip and BorderTown is my home away from home. Nothing like a week in Tombstone dressed cowboy the whole time and getting to see the  many friends we have made out there through the years. Joining us this year is Mongo, Long Gulch, Copperhead Joe, Whiskey Creek Johnson, Iron Maiden, Yazoo City Gal and Hombre Sin Nombre. Whiskey Creek beat me at the State this year so BorderTown will be a grudge match with shots of Whiskey as the final bet.

General Discussion / Oak Ridge Outlaw Badges
« on: September 24, 2019, 11:27:11 AM »
Not really my place but dont know who else it willing to do it so here goes. Mister Badly has started doing the research already.

If you want an Oak Ridge Outlaw Badge with your Alias on it post here and we can get an order together and save a little on shipping. If there is enough ordered maybe there can be a bulk discount. That may be wishful thinking on my part.

We will give this a few weeks to gather names and then place an order. I would post a picture but I have forgotten how to do that.

Of course this is coming from one of those "I don't need no stinking badges" Outlaws.

Rules Discussion / Round on Carrier of long gun
« on: September 21, 2019, 07:51:22 PM »
Interesting thing happened to me today. I had a round left on the carrier which would have resulted in a minor safety violation, however, my lever was slightly closed and had pushed the lead tip of my bullet into the chamber, maybe a qtr inch. This actually resulted in a Stage DQ since the nose of the bullet was in the chamber.
If any part of a live round is in the chamber of a long gun it is considered in the chamber. Thus a cocked and loaded long gun left the shooters hand.
A hard call to make but it was the right call. I only have myself to blame since I lost count and only shot 9 rounds to began with.

General Discussion / Breaking 170 while stageing a gun
« on: August 12, 2019, 08:05:15 AM »
Let me see if I can clear up something I tired to address before the  match on Saturday.
Straight up or down range is OK while approaching the line and staging the guns, however, with the stage where the table was angled into the berm. If a person were to have the SG in their left hand and placed the butt of the SG on the table while they staged the rifle with their right hand the rotation of the body will cause the barrel of the rifle to lean back thus breaking the straight up plan. It is very easy to forget one gun while staging the other gun.
I hope that makes a little more sense and I am sorry for any confusion I may have caused, just be aware of both long guns at all times.

General Discussion / Possible Rule Change
« on: August 08, 2019, 02:17:57 PM »
There is a thread on the Rules Forum about a possible Rule Change. The TG's will be voting on this change in the near future (I hope)
I would like to hear from the club members, I know which way I would like to see it go but I will vote the club line. Please take a look and weigh in on your feelings.

Rules Discussion / Rule Change Vote
« on: August 08, 2019, 08:31:51 AM »
The powers that be are trying to figure out how to vote on rule changes on line or through the mail.
The first test will be a proposed rule change that has come up many times over the last few years.

It involves leaving the Loading Table with a cocked rifle, they are cleaning up the wording now but basically it will state
if you go to the firing line with a cocked hammer on your rifle you will be asked to point the gun down range and pull the trigger, if it clicks then no call, stage the gun and start the stage, if it goes off, SDQ for moving with a cocked loaded gun.

I will post the exact wording as soon as I find it. I will also be talking about this proposal at the next few shoots to see how the club wants me to vote. Right now it is a SDQ to leave the Loading Table with the hammer in any position other than fully down.
I for one am all for it. This rule has gotten a lot of us and should be addressed if there is not a safety issue.

General Discussion / I'll make you famous
« on: April 19, 2019, 02:48:27 PM »
Well maybe not famous but I have a pretty cool offer.
A few years back a few of us in our club helped out a fellow that ran a dude ranch in Del Rio with a show he was going to host. We dressed cowboy for the weekend, did exhibition shooting and some re-enacting. The show itself was not that big but those of us that participated had a blast. Anyway, Shawn has reached out again asking if we could help with another project. Seems he has been contacted by a reality TV show who wants to shot at his place and he needs a period correct cowboy bartender. I can not make it as it is the same weekend as the NRA so I will not be available along with Cactus and Doc.
What I need so someone who can stand behind a bar and act like a bartender. Shawn is offering a cabin for the weekend and I am sure food is involved too. They had great food and nice lodging. I would not offer this to anyone else if I could do it myself but thats just me. ::)
Anyway here is the email he sent to Lady T with the dates involved. If you are interested in getting away for the weekend and having a little fun at the same time let me know and I will make the introductions.

Take a look at his website at http://frenchbroadduderanch.com/

    HI,
Sorry it's been so long since I've written you. How are you and Tombstone getting along? I have a purpose in writing so I will get to it. A reality TV show just let me know today that is coming out to film on the ranch on April 26-29 and they have asked me to find a "cowboy" bartender. The first person I thought of that would look authentic was Tombstone. I don't know if you and he could even consider coming Friday and Saturday nights (you could stay here in one of the cabins) and doing it but I thought I would ask ya'll first. If you can't it is possible you just might know someone in the club. Please let me know as it seems to be important to the TV show and I need to find someone quick.
    Thanks!!

General Discussion / On the Road Again
« on: October 15, 2018, 08:34:40 AM »
After leaving Wartrace after the state match, we fought hard wind for about two hours before we hit rain. That knocked the wind down but we had some really hard areas of storms heading west. Our original plans were to drive two hard days to get to Ruidoso New Mexico. Due to the Polar Vortex that is blasting its way through our country (picture the movie Day After Tomorrow) we regrouped and decided we would take two pretty easy days and go to Oklahoma City to ride out the freeze. Yes it is going to be below freezing in places we were going this week with snow predicted. We figured we could go to the Cowboy Hall of Fame again and maybe hit the casino one night. Inside activities for a few days. Depending on the weather, we will probably drop south and find some warmer weather so Doc and I can ride some. I was thinking Mexico maybe. They are talking South Texas and South New Mexico; Probably a better idea than mine. Anyway, Ruidoso is pretty much out on the way out to Tombstone but we still have it on our radar for the trip back if the weather breaks.

First stop was Little Rock where the high today was at midnight, temps dropping through the day down into the low 40’s. Heading to Oklahoma City today where the high today is in the 40’s, low tonight is predicted to be in the 30’s. Don’t see any bike rides for a few more days. I will let you know how it progresses.

Although we did lose Cactus we have found a stand-in for him. I will try to post a few pictures of our journeys with our new Cactus which by the way always runs on time, does not eat much and is much quitter and a little brighter. (This one lights up)

How do I insert pictures on our forum? I am some dumb when it comes to computers.
